Idaho native composer Aaron Pike started his musical training at the age of 9, studying piano. His interest in composition became apparent almost immediately, writing a number of small works for piano. With no formal instruction in theory or orchestration, at the age of 17, Aaron amazed audiences at the premier of his first major work, Omaha Beach, scored for wind ensemble and large chorus. A year later it was again performed by the Brigham Young University-Idaho Wind Ensemble and University Choir. In late 2007 Aaron was hired to score his first feature film, Five Days of Fire, which won best picture at the 2008 Spudfest Film Festival.
In the summer of 2007 he was invited to study composition with David Tcimpidis, of the Mannes School of Music, and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Paul Moravec at California Summer Music where Dr. Hans Boepple, of Santa Clara University, premiered Aaron’s new and exciting work for piano, Sudden Movements. Also in 2007 he received a commission from the BYU-I Symphony Orchestra to write a new orchestral work for their 2008-2009 concert series. The work, Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, a one movement piano concerto, was premiered in February of 2008. In the summer of 2008 Aaron was a chosen to be a Brevard Music Festival Composer Fellow where he studied with composers Bob Aldridge, of Montclair State University, and Kevin Puts, of the Peabody Conservatory.
His music has been performed in concert at Vallivue High School, Brigham Young University-Idaho, the Stevenson School, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Brevard Music Center and Rice University.
Aaron is currently working on two commissions from BYU-I, a piece for wind ensemble and chorus, to be premiered at the annual Christmas in the Snow concert, and incidental music for the play Caucasian Chalk Circles.
